When I was a young kid I was pretty big into sports. I come from the middle of Michigan so sports is like a second language. I found myself a dancer, big into basketball and volleyball. Then somewhere around 15 years old, right after my father died, depression crept in like the ugly monster that is is and I just stopped moving.
That’s what makes the photo with this post so powerful to me. That’s me, as I am and I am strong as ever. Perhaps one day, not to far in the future, I will be stronger but that’s not the point. The point is with all that life has given me I somehow found a way to move throughout NYC and my own life again.
I wanted to introduce fitness as part of wellness because it’s like the mean girl that I’ve finally found something in common with and that is the power of movement. For so long and for so many other people I know my goal and theirs has been to go to the gym, go on a diet, to focus on their weight. I too tried this method for over five years. Don’t believe me? Ask my trainers throughout the years. They’ve heard the complaints.
What they will also tell you is that I try and I often fail. The difference being that I never give up. I am always back after a short time off and always with the knowledge that I learned something new each time. This time it’s that I need movement to feel my power. I don’t need to be an athlete but I do need to move. I need to work with my body, sweat, struggle, triumph. It took me many years to realize that the amount I move plays a large role in how I feel and the mood I’m in.
So in order to become more and more SELFKIND each and every day I have to commit to spending time moving my body. What are some of your favorite ways to move and stay active? Has it given you power? Comment below!
